Vehicles of Style

Give childhood conveyances new life by repurposing them as home decor.

Long after they have transported children on youthful adventures, toy cars, trucks, wagons, bicycles, tricycles and doll carriages can become functional accents that bring a dash of whimsy to a grown-up decorating scheme. Use your imagination to keep these once-beloved playthings rolling, taking a cue from the ideas below.

•  Service station -- Fill the bed of a toy truck with party treats in small dishes or jars, or contain cutlery and napkins within tins or jars to enhance a buffet table. An option for a bathroom would be stocking jars with cotton balls or bath salts or placing rolled hand towels in the truck bed.

•  Floral delivery -- Plant a truck or a petite wagon with seasonal flowers for use in an outdoor container garden or as an indoor centerpiece. To protect your vehicle, use a plastic liner or small potted plants.

•  Bookmobile -- Position two smaller cars or trucks on either side of some upright books to hold them in place. For extra style and stability, fill the trucks with seasonal decor. As an alternative, use the truck bed to hold a few decorative tomes. A larger vehicle or wagon could host a stack of books, magazines or folded textiles.

•  Pretty pedal -- Paint a past-its-prime bicycle or tricycle to coordinate with your indoor or outdoor palette and park it where a touch of whimsy is warranted, either in a garden, on a porch or in the corner of a room. Add a basket to showcase fresh or faux florals and small decorative items.

•  Dolled-up delight -- Prop a wicker doll buggy on a porch to showcase potted posies or pile it with pillows and park it beside a chair to bring a spot of color to an empty corner.
