Bedrooms Wrapped in Warmth

Now that the holidays are in the rearview mirror and the decorations have been put away, your home might be feeling a bit bare as you await warmer weather. Now is the perfect time to cozy up your spaces -- starting with the bedroom.

If you’re in the market for a few warm-up elements, the timing is right -- January is typically when retailers discount sheets, comforter sets, blankets, towels and other home goods. This dates back to 1878, when department store owner John Wanamaker created the first “white sale” to encourage inventory turnaround. However, you don’t need to go shopping to boost the comfort quotient in your bedroom -- you might have all you need around your house.

Read on for details on how other homeowners have added chill-chasing elements that make their rooms cozy havens where they can dream of spring.
Pillow Talk
This homeowner wanted a comfy, cushioned look on a budget, so she used fabrics to camouflage the modern bed frame and headboard her husband had owned since college. A long bed skirt, chunky knit throw, and three rows of pillows create a pretty and plush vibe -- proof, the homeowner says, that “bedding can really transform anything.”

Quilted Comfort
Hanging a quilt on the wall behind a bed provides it with greater visual presence and lends softness and tactile appeal that counter hard surfaces in a bedroom like this one, which features wood flooring and an iron bed frame.

Cozy Canopy
In keeping with the Colonial style she adores, this homeowner outfitted her four-poster bed with a canopy and drapes, giving it a somewhat enclosed feel enhanced by her use of rich colors and dense patterns. Layering thick, colorful rugs over neutral carpeting also helps to make the room feel like a comforting space.

Calming Colors
A plethora of pillows propped against a tufted fabric headboard and an upholstered bench outfitted with a flowy-skirted slipcover bring this master bedroom a sense of serenity and enveloping warmth. Blue-painted nightstands and a few textiles in similar shades balance the neutral hues, adding depth to the palette while maintaining the room’s soothing appeal.

Vibrant Touches
Piles of handcrafted quilts stitched by three generations, along with quilted pillow shams and a cherry-red monogram pillow, offer a bold contrast to the white walls and bed linens in this room. The brightly colored textiles also bring out the warmth of the wood tones found in the vintage handcarved furniture.
