Glorious Table Decor

As you prepare for upcoming holiday celebrations, from a gift-exchange with friends to Christmas dinner, make your gathering even more memorable with a beautifully assembled tablescape.

Creating a truly appealing tablescape is more than just setting out dishes and cutlery—it’s intentionally pulling together a tabletop arrangement that sets a certain mood or conveys a particular theme.

We gathered some tips from interior designer and event planner Jennifer Carroll, who shares her ideas through her blog, Celebrating Everyday Life. Jennifer was the creative force behind the Country Sampler special interest title Celebrating Everyday Life, which is still available on our website. Here are a few of her ideas for crafting a spectacular tablescape:
Get Creative with Your Centerpiece
Start with a unique container, such as a narrow drawer or a vintage soup tureen, and include unexpected elements along with traditional florals, such as fruits and vegetables, nuts, fabric or small ornaments. Or, forgo a container and place a length of garland down the center of the table, like this one made from magnolia branches accented with ribbon, gilded berries and poinsettia blooms. The low height of the garland adds a lush touch without impeding conversation.

Make Personalized Place Cards
Seek out distinctive ways to help guests find their place at the table. Perhaps you change up the holder, using a pinecone or ornament with a clip, or use a personalized gingerbread cookie or a gift tag attached to a small wrapped package. This alternative offers a naturally festive feel -- simply adorn a glossy leaf with your guest’s initial using a small paintbrush and metallic paint, and attach it to a jingle bell using a ribbon bow.

Repeat Elements for Continuity
Give your table a cohesive look by repeating patterns or colors, like the plaid on this scarf used as a table runner and the tartan bags situated at each place setting. The red tones in the dessert cups and votive holders and the shiny gold chargers and beading on the centerpiece illustrate how to carry color through your decorative scheme.

Layer Pattern and Color
Fashionable folks know how to layer clothing, and the same concept can help to bring a richness and depth to your table. Look for common elements, such as motifs or colors, to draw everything together, like the reds, golds and greens at work in this place setting.
