Lovely and Functional Laundry Rooms

Though most of us view laundry as a chore, the space where we do this activity need not be as mundane as the task itself. Rinse away your washday woes by creating a laundry area that feels as inviting as the rest of your home. Including decorative details and colorful touches, in addition to handy storage and useful workspace, will help give the hardworking room a more lighthearted outlook. Here’s how several homeowners have done just that:
Packing a Punch
Bright accents, including bold blue table legs and a colorful carpet, along with the varied textures of the shiplap siding and subway tile on the walls, lend vibrancy to this domestic work area. A combination of cabinets, hanging storage and open shelving, as well as sorting baskets that tuck underneath a narrow table, ensures the room is highly functional but maintains an open feel.

Sense of Whimsy
All work and no play is not the mantra of this inventive homeowner, who managed to infuse a fanciful feel into her laundry room with additions that include a chalkboard painted door, an artfully embellished light fixture, ruffled skirting on the work table, washboard cabinet doors and more.

Old-Fashioned Appeal
Adding elements used throughout your living spaces, such as the mustard-yellow paint and checked fabrics this homeowner favors, connect the laundry room with the rest of the home. A unique feature -- like this 1839 pump made over into a faucet -- gives the room character of its own. The homeowner’s father and husband took apart a modern faucet and reassembled it inside the pump, which now offers both hot and cold running water.

Attention to Detail
Small facets give this industrious room a bit of polish, such as the washboard-shaped backsplash for the utility sink and the turned wood legs on the folding table built from salvaged wood fencing material. Artwork and fresh florals, along with other decorations, enhance the room’s visual appeal.

Behind the Scenes
An expansive wood countertop, base cabinets and curtains keep the washing machine and dryer under wraps in this mudroom/laundry room. The counter is great for folding clothing but also offers plenty of room to arrange an inviting seasonal vignette. Upper cabinets framing the window offer even more out-of-sight storage for laundry essentials.
