Quick and Easy Makeover Tips

Keep your decorating simple and cost-effective with these smart hints.

Illinois homeowner and decorator Teri Pfau is an expert on getting the most for her decorating dollar. Follow her tips for making your home beautiful without breaking the bank.

Hue's the Boss: "A can of spray paint or a gallon of paint is a really inexpensive way to change something totally," Teri says. Paint an off-color find to match your decor, or choose light mustard, mocha or maroon wall paint to transform your rooms.

It's Only Natural: From small (pinecone placecards for a winter dinner party) to large (a branch swag over a window), natural elements create a rustic feel -- for free!

In the Atmosphere: "Low-watt lightbulbs and candles really warm up the home and give you a cozy feeling," Teri says. Buy tealights in bulk and spread them around for a homey glow.

So Refreshing!: "Rearrange and refresh," Teri advises. "I move furniture from room to room, or within a room." Or, save yourself some heavy lifting and simply rotate your collections and window treatments for makeovers that completely change the look of a room without depleting your pocketbook.
